Senior Care Employers, Please Don’t Leave Your Applicants Waiting!

After receiving the question below this week I thought it warranted mentioning. We actually receive some version of this question a lot and frankly, and I think it is something everyone wonders after applying to a position online.

“After applying online, how long does it usually take for an employer to contact
a potential candidate?

The unfortunate answer to this question is that it really depends on a case by case basis. There are so many factors that go into how quickly an employer contacts a candidate. For instance, does the employer use an automated process for screening potential hires, are they appropriately staffed in their HR department, do they already have a candidate well into the mix for this job, how many applications did they receive for this posting, how particular are they trying to be on the necessary qualifications… the list goes on and on.

“How long should it take an employer to respond” is probably the question should be phrased? Although there are again exceptions to every rule, I would say that an employer really ought to respond in two weeks or less. It is my belief that if an employer doesn’t respond with some kind of communication within two weeks of your application, than you are probably not truly being considered for the position (for whatever reason, it may not be you). Granted, their communication may just be an automated response that says “we have received your application”, “we would now like to you take this test”, “fill out this form”, “someone will call you”, etc. but it is still communication. You still may not get the job, but you are clearly valued in the process for this position and the potential job should stay on your radar.

So, if you don’t receive a response within a few weeks of you application, don’t lose hope but instead keeping looking for that right fit. It is out there. And Employers, please remember that for every resume or application that comes through your fax or email, there is a person that is on the other end very much wanting to know what you will say, even if what you say is “we are not interested at this time”.
